The Shopify integration

Verified trade buyers,
auto-onboarded to
your Shopify store.

Interior by Caitlin Kah

Credenza verifies interior designers, architects, and other trade buyers through nine evidence checks—then creates the customer profile in your Shopify store, or updates it if the customer already exists, with verification status, exemption details, and your trade-customer tag, so existing pricing rules and tax-exempt checkout work automatically.

One-click install from your Credenza dashboard · OAuth + metafields + webhooks configured automatically · Works on every Shopify plan, including Shopify Plus B2B.

Definition

Credenza is the verification layer behind every trade account in Shopify. Designers are verified through nine evidence checks before they reach your store; Credenza then creates the customer profile in Shopify—or updates it if the customer already exists—with verification status, exemption fields, and a trade-customer tag. The signed resale certificate lives in Credenza's secure, audit-ready vault.

Why it matters

Manual trade onboarding doesn't scale—and the exposure compounds.

You're on the hook wherever you have nexus.

Sell into enough states and you owe sales tax in each one. Every tax-exempt order you accept on an invalid or expired resale certificate is exposure—and it stacks up quietly across every state you ship to.

The rules don't hold still.

Certificate formats, renewal cadences, and expiration logic vary by state—some never expire, some reset every calendar year. Staying current by hand, per customer, per state, is nearly impossible.

Tagging and chasing certificates is a standing tax on your team.

Creating customer tags, tracking expirations, requesting renewed certificates—repeated on every applicant and every renewal. It never ends, and it never gets faster.

That time belongs on sales and service.

Your team should be selling and taking care of designers—not acting as part-time tax-compliance reviewers.

What the integration does

Six jobs Credenza handles so your team doesn't.

Verified trade accounts, on your rules

Every applicant runs through Credenza's nine-check verification engine. You set the gating—auto-approve, manual review, or reject—and Credenza applies your rules consistently on every application.

Customer profiles, created and tagged

Credenza creates each verified designer's Shopify customer profile—or updates it if they already exist—and applies your trade-customer tag plus tags for role and discount tier. Your existing pricing rules and segmentation treat them as trade buyers automatically.

Resale certificates and state-scoped exemptions

Credenza manages resale certificates across 46 jurisdictions—every state form plus the MTC and SST multistate forms—with each state's expiration logic built in. Exemptions written to Shopify fire only where the designer is registered, and revoke and reinstate themselves as certificates lapse and renew.

Compliance-ready audit trail

Verification evidence, signed certificates, and tax-exempt orders link end-to-end in Credenza's append-only ledger. The signed cert PDF lives in Credenza's secure, audit-ready vault; the Shopify customer record carries verification status, exemption fields, and certificate metadata.

Drift detection

Credenza watches every field it manages—tags, state tax exemptions, and metafields—and alerts you when one is edited outside the integration. No silent overwrites; no exemption decisions made without a paper trail.

B2B company sync

For Shopify B2B merchants, verification metafields mirror to the corresponding company record so company-scoped pricing rules and tax-exempt checkout fire correctly.

Install

One OAuth click.
Zero JSON.

Open Credenza, click Connect Shopify, authorize. That's the install. Credenza handles everything else behind the scenes—the customer fields it writes to, the live sync of approvals back to your store, the tags your storefront rules read, and the audit trail that links every tax-exempt order to the certificate that justified it.

No app to download. No theme code to edit. Works on every Shopify plan, including Shopify Plus B2B.

Frequently asked questions

Credenza verifies trade-customer applicants—interior designers, architects, and other commercial buyers—through nine evidence checks against authoritative sources, then creates the customer record in your Shopify store (or updates the matching one if it already exists) with the result. Approved customers get a configurable trade-customer tag, state-scoped tax exemptions (one per nexus state, e.g. US_NY_RESELLER_EXEMPTION), and a set of Credenza-namespaced metafields that capture trade status, exemption status, exempt-states index, certificate expiration, firm details, and discount percent. Your existing storefront pricing rules and tax-exempt checkout work automatically against those fields.
